RAILWAY SAFETY
In the field of railway safety, acting as a national safety authority, the Directorate for Railways has the following responsibilities:
- grants safety authorisations,
 - grants safety authorisations for industrial railways,
 - grants safety certificates,
 - grants safety certificates for industrial railways,
 - performs audits of safety management system upon granting of safety authorisations of certificates,
 - grants certificates on fulfilment of requirements to be met by a risk assessment body,
 - grants certificates to entities in charge of maintenance of freight wagons,
 - performs audits of entities in charge of maintenance holding a certificate,
 - grants certificates to workshops for maintenance of railway vehicles
 - grants certificates to companies for carrying out technical inspection of railway vehicles
 - grants certificates to companies for maintenance of superstructure and substructure of railway lines,
 - grants certificates to companies for maintenance of energy subsystem,
 - grants certificates for maintenance of signalling and safety devices,
 - grants certificates for maintenance of railway telecommunication network,
 - performs periodical checks to verify whether holders of certificates for maintenance and technical inspection meet the required conditions
 - grants certificates to professional training centres for railway workers
 - performs periodical checks to verify whether holders of certificates for professional training centres meet the required conditions,
 - grants certificates for train drivers’ examiners,
 - grants train driving licences,
 - approves the maintenance of the narrow-gauge industrial railway and the vehicles used on it, as well as traffic operation,
 - approves the maintenance of tourist – museum railway subsystem, as well as traffic operation on that railway,
 - keeps and updates the register on train driving licences,
 - adopts regulations in the field of railway transport,
 - adopts standards in the field of railway transport,
 - keeps records as provided for by the Railway Safety Law,
 - performs other tasks according to the Law.
 
According to the Law on Railways, the Directorate for Railways has the following competencies in the field of safety:
- approves act on conditions and manner of carrying out of transport operations on industrial railways.
